Football

The Liverpool fans were anticipating the revenge of the last year’s home defeat on Chelsea in the high-voltage clash this Saturday, 8th November. However it was Chelsea in the end stealing the show again by 2-1 at Anfield that maintained their unbeaten position at the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool took the charge with the first goal from Emre Can in the 8th minute but the lead stood for only five minutes as the big blue defender Gary Kahil hit a goal after the use of goal-line technology. It was Jose Mourinho’s usual weapon of choice, Diego Costa hitting the winning goal in the 66th minute which led to Chelsea’s win and a new club record of 17 games unbeaten.

 

Chess

The Word Chess championship 2014 begun at World Chess Federation in Sochi, Russia between the champion Magnus Carlsen and the challenger Viswanathan Anand. Game 1 was played on Saturday, 8th November which ended after 48 moves in a fascinating draw. Carlsen who snatched the world title from Anand in 2013 drew the first blood of the tournament in 2nd game played on Sunday. Playing with whites, 23-year-old Carlsen took 1-0 lead in just 35 moves against the four-time world champion. Anand has played very defensively in the opening games but is expected to counter-attack in the 3rd game scheduled tomorrow, 11th November. The tournament features 12 games and will climax on 27th of this month.

 

Cricket

Virat Kohli, the Indian captain said in the press conference prior to the match that Team India will go in for a kill in the 3rd ODI of the tournament and the same happened at Hyderabad. India took an unbeatable lead of 3-0 in the tournament. Sri Lanka winning the toss went in to bat first and Mahela Jayawardene struck a fluent century which helped his team reach a respectable total of 242. Team India chased this score in 44.1 overs with 91 from Sikhar Dhawan and skipper’s sublime 53. Kohli became the fastest player to reach 6000 runs in mere 144 ODI and surpassed the great Viv Richards. The next match in the line is at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday, 13th November.
