EPT Barcelona: John Juanda Wins the Main Event; Mustapha Kanit Takes Down the High Roller

This year the European Poker Tour turned out to be a historic series as it saw the five-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner John Juanda outplaying the biggest ever EPT main event field of 1,694 players. This was Juanda’s John-Juanda-EPT-Main Eventfirst EPT title for which he took home the first-place prize of €1,022,593. This epic victory puts Juanda ninth on the all-time money list with over $17 million in career earnings.

The final table started with Denys Shafikov as the chip leader. Victor Bogdanov busted on the very first hand and the Russian player took home €104,000. Mario Sanchez was the next player to be out, followed by Amir Touma who lost with Q-J to Juanda’s pocket threes and collected €194,100. Then it was the turn of Andreas Samuelsson who ran with J-10off suit into Steve Warburton’s aces, and took a way out-of-tournament at sixth place for €253,900 while Rainer Kempe and Denys Shafikov got knocked out in fifth and fourth place.

John Juanda, Steve Warburton and Frederik Jensen, the last three men standing, made a deal at this point. During the three-handed battle, Jensen was the one who hit the rail leaving the match between the Warburton and Juanda. In the heads-up game, Warburton experienced flip-flops, and finally his pocket eights ran into Juanda’s pair of queens.
