The 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) has crowned yet another bracelet winner at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and it was Bulgaria’s Ognyan Dimov who outlasted 1,663 entries to win Event #17: $1,500 NLH 6-Handed event. He earned his first bracelet and $378,743 in top prizemoney.
The 2015 EPT Deauville Main Event champion Dimov faced Italy’s Antonio Barbato in the heads-up battle. Both were cheered and supported by a boisterous rail but the Bulgarian ended up celebrating his first bracelet and becoming his country’s third player to win a WSOP bracelet. Before him, only Nick Jivkov and Simeon Naydenov have claimed bracelets for his country.
Post his win, Dimov said. “I tried to stay calm and felt good playing. Obviously, everyone saw that I ran pretty amazing, but you have to run like this to win a tournament. I can’t complain.”
Dimov played a role of eliminator to rise to victory, eliminating the four of his five final table opponents in quick succession to secure the coveted title. Four-handed, Dimov pulled into a massive chip lead after hero-calling against the well-known Ryan D’Angelo. After Nick Schulman going out in third place, it was heads-up where Dimov had a massive lead 9 to 1 against Barbato.
Despite the huge gap, Italy’s Antonio Barbato played well and gave a tough fight but he could not go all the way. In the end, Barbato shoved around 7BB with Ac 9h and was called by Dimov with Kd 6d. The board ran Jd 7c 6h 5s Kc. Dimov won the title by making a pair of Kings and Sixes.
India’s ace player Aditya Agarwal made a deep run in this tournament, finishing 133rd for a cool $2,615 (INR 1.76 Lac). With rich experience and good knowledge of the structures and competitive WSOP fields, Agarwal is one of the favourites to win WSOP bracelets for India.
Agarwal survived a massive field of 1,663 players, making it among the 264 survivors who entered Day 2. However, his deep run ended on Saturday when he finished in 133rd place.
