The WPTDeepstacks has wrapped up its latest international stop with their €1,100 Main Event at Casino Barriere de Deauville. The event attracted a total of 474 entries (including 363 unique + 111 re-entries) and created a €500,544 ($567,665) in prize pool. After three days of intense battles, it was the French player Saul Berdugo who emerged as the champion to claim the first-place prize of €98,000 ($111,141) along with the €2,000 WPTDeepStacks season-ending event package.
In heads-up, Berdugo defeated Abdelhamid El Khayati who walked away with an impressive €63,595 for his runner-up finish. Before this big win, Berdugo had cashed just a single tournament on his poker resume – $1,208 for finishing 12th in the 2018 Pasino Poker Series €330 NLH.
Top 63 player made money with min-cashes starting from $2,151. Some notables who finished in the money were David Dana (15th – $5,863), Jan Boubli (25th – $3,487), Bruno Fitoussi (33rd – $2,982), Michel Betting (48th – $2,665), Morgan Lecam (57th – $2,143), and Gilles Huet (63rd – $2,143).
The final day of the event saw 16 runners returning to battle it out for the top prize of €98,000 and €2,000 WPTDS season-ending package. Berdugo began as the chip leader among the final 16.
“I only lost the chip lead for five minutes, I never felt in danger,” he told WPT officials after the win.”
As he said, Berdugo lost his chip lead for a short time only. Moving into the final table, he eliminated several players. His first victim was Roman Hamouche whose A8 lost to Berdugo’s king-jack. Up next, Berudo used ace-jack to eliminate Mohamed Mamouni, who held ace-ten, in seventh place
Berdugo’s next elimination was Joris Mahe who moved all-in pre-flop with his 7d 6h and was finally called by Berdugo who won the pot with his Kc 9h to eliminate Mahe in third place and move into heads-up with El Khayati. On the final hand of the tournament, Berdugo had Kc 10d, while Khayati had 4d 2c. The board ran out 5h 3h 8c 10h 7d giving the coveted pot as well as title to Berdugo.
