Team India is going strong at the ongoing 2019 World Series of Poker (WSOP). In Event #53: $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack 8-Handed, four Indians scored ITM finishes with Goa-based poker pro Shravan Chhabria being the last man standing among them. He finished 21st for $12,415.
A total of 4 Indians had made it to Day 2 and Chhabria headlined them with the eight biggest stack of 980,000. The other three Indians to cash in the event were Sajal Gupta (53rd for $5,541), Ashish Ahuja (248th for $2,164) and Shashank Jain (411th for $1,534) who rounded out Indian cashes at the event. Gupta logged in second score, while Ahuja bagged his seventh cash at the series.
Chhabria was doing pretty well and had even crossed 4 million mark in chips when his Pocket Aces won him a big pot from Matthew Volosevich. The model-turned-poker pro further extended his stack by eliminating Chad Smith in 30th place. However, Chhabria’s good run eventually came to an end when his pocket fours were cracked by queens of Tomas Kubaliak and he got busted in 21st place.
The event registered 3,759 entries and generated a $2,676,408 prizepool. It lasted for three days, and in the end, Spain’s Santiago Soriano took it down for $371,203, after a confident run through the final table. Top 564 players were paid out in this event with min-cashes starting from $1,187.
Soriano defeated Amir Lehavot of Israel in heads-up, who was denied his second bracelet. The last hand of the tournament saw Soriano with Jc 10h and Lehavot Ac As. The board ran out 3s 10c 8d 10s 3s. Unfortunately for Lehavot, his aces could not hold up and he finished 2nd for $229,410.
Soriano had entered the FT as the biggest stack with 27,000,000 and he went on to extend his lead and eventually win the tournament. He scored his first elimination at the FT when his AQ busted KQ of Daniele D’Angelo, who went out in seventh place. Very soon, he got a flush with 5c 4c to crack Aces of Samuel Gagnon who exited in sixth place. Soriano scored his third elimination when he busted Ben Underwood of Canada in third place. Underwood made his third deep run of the summer by finishing third. He got eliminated when his A9 failed to beat Kd 4d of Soriano.
Finally, it was heads-up between Soriano and Amir Lehavot where the latter could not go all the way and ended his run in 2nd place. It was the first WSOP event win as well as the bracelet for Soriano. With this win, he took his live earnings to $618,859 and jumped to 91st place in Spain’s ATM rankings.
