Alexandros Kolonias from Greece is the latest WSOP Europe Main Event champion. The new champion defeated Germany’s Claas Segebrecht in heads-up to earn not only his career best score of €1,133,678 and his first gold bracelet but also the first live title. On his way to the victory, Kolonias outlasted a 541-entry field, including a tough final table that featured the likes of Anthony Zinno and Dario Sammartino, both well-known international players with several FT finishes under their belts.
The WSOPE Main Event victory gave Kolonias the first seven-figure score of his career and took his total live tournament earnings to a whopping $3,729,554. His previous best live cash had come through a second-place finish in the €25,000 High Roller at EPT Monte Carlo in 2016 for $930,117.
It was Anthony Zinno who entered the final day as the chip leader among the six survivors. The talented high-stakes pro had a chance to become the champion but it was not his day. He exited in third place for €485,291. Zinno who had a sizable chip lead over the six remaining players was busted by the eventual champ Kolonias when his A-9 failed to beat J-10 on a Q-J-6-8-K board.
Kolonias entered the final table with a healthy stack of 12,150,000 chips, second only to Zinno. He showed how to play with a big stack and went on to beat a tough final table. On his way to the win, he busted Zinno in third place to eventually enter heads-up against Germany’s Segebrecht.
Kolonias began heads-up with 31,100,000 chips against 23,000,000 of Segebrecht. The dual did not last long. On the final hand, Kolonias picked up As-Ks and called an all-in by Segebrecht who had 3d 3h. The board ran K-Q-2-J-5, giving Kolonias the pot as well as the coveted WSOPE ME title.
The top 82 were paid with min-cashes starting from €15,089. Some notables to finish in the money were the likes of Jan-Peter Jachtmann (11th for €59,759), David “ODB” Baker (12th for €59,759), Alex Foxen (26th for €26,986), Martin Kabrhel (41st for €20,424), Benjamin Pollak (47th for €20,424), Event #2: €550 Pot-Limit Omaha champion Dash Dudley (48th for €20,424), Joao Vieira (49th for €18,330), defending champion Jack Sinclair (61st for €16,805), and Jeff Madsen (71st for €15,748).
