Five weeks into 2014 and the view from the top of the Global Poker Index remains the same with German poker pro Ole Schemion settled in comfortably. Though he hasn’t made any cashes at the ongoing Aussie Millions but he is still unmoved from his throne. The current GPI Rankings released today feature the same group of top 10 poker players with the only change being in the form of Dan Smith and Philipp Gruissem interchanging spots. A stats that jumps out by giving a look at the GPI 300 Top 10 rankings is the dominance of USA, Germany and Canada in the world of poker.
Each week, the Global Poker Index (GPI) releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes a player’s results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods. The GPI rankings released every Thursday rank the top 300 players as well maintain a Player of the Year Leader board also.
Last Year’s Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu sits at second place behind Schemion followed by German Marvin Rettenmaier. Vanessa Selbst who has climbed the ranks in January owing to her good showing in the PCA 2014 events sits pretty at Sixth followed by Ravi Raghavan and Paul Volpe.
Others swimming upwards include Mustapha Kanit who created Aussie Millions History by winning two titles, Ondrej Vinkralek and Tobias Reinkemeier. While Kanit jumped up 92 places, Ondrej climbed 98 places followed by Tobias who ascended 91 places. Some poker players who dropped down in the GPI rankings include Walid Bou Habib(falls 100 places), Blair Hindle(-64 places) and Tom Hall(-45 places).
Indian origin poker player from USA Kunal patel made his way into the GPI Rankings and sits at 248 spot.
