The 2019 edition of the US Poker Open (USPO) is finally in the books with the $100K Main Event crowning a winner in David Peters. Peters outlasted a field of 33 runners to win the coveted title for $1,320,000. The 31-year-old American poker pro had to deal with tough opponents on the final table and defeat Chris Hunichen heads-up to win the event and take his live earnings to $31,590,261.
Sean Winter made the most final-table finishes with five FTs and a title, while 2018 USPO champion Stephen Chidwick won multiple titles at the series. This win was Peters’ 9th seven-figure score. The pro is currently ranked 5th on poker’s all-time money list, behind only Justin Bonomo ($44,027,047), Daniel Negreanu ($38,663,630), Erik Seidel ($34,842,743) and Germany’s Fedor Holz ($32,992,603).
“This feels amazing. This is obviously a very prestigious tournament, a great series, and to come from behind and to pass Sean by 10 points at the very end, that’s a pretty-pretty crazy feeling,” Peters said.
“I’m just always trying to get better. I put in an endless amount of hours away from the table and it feels great to see all the hard work pay off. I’m always very hungry, always wanting to get better and better and better and better and that’s not going to stop. I hope to keep that keep that going.” he added.
Peters entered the final day as fourth in chips, with nine players remaining and only five of them set to make money. All-time tournament earnings leader Justin Bonomo went out as the FT bubble. He was eliminated by Ryan Riess, who followed him in fifth place ($264,000). Keith Tilston then soared up and grew his stack further by eliminating Martin Zamani in fourth place ($330,000).
The key moment for Peters was when he won a preflop race against Tilston with K-Q versus pocket eights to take the lead. He then eliminated Tiltson in third place ($528,000) to take a solid lead into heads-up with Chris Hunichen. The final hand of the dual saw Hunichen limp from the button for 80,000 and Peters raise to 320,000. Hunichen shoved all-in for 2,650,000 and Peters called with his 9d 9c against Ah 8c. The board ran out Jh Jc 10s 8d 6d where Peters won the main event.
