The 2019 World Poker Tour (WPT) Barcelona series hosted at Casino Barcelona is in the books. One of its last events to conclude was the €1,100 PLO that guaranteed €100,000 in prizemoney. A total of160 entries (including re-entries) came in this tournament and the guarantee was easily met.
The tournament saw three Indians join the field, including Abhishek Goindi, Jagdeep Singh and Gaurav Gala. Interestingly, all the three Indians reached the final table. The 9-handed FT was played yesterday and the first Indian to bust from the final table was Gala, who exited in 8th place for €3,000 (INR 2.34 Lac). Next up was Singh who finished 6th for €7,000 (INR 5.47 Lac) prizemoney.
After Gala and Singh, Goindi kept going and playing some excellent poker. Goindi reached heads-up but his run eventually ended in 2nd place. He earned a good €25,000 (INR 19.57 Lac) for his efforts.
A Little About Goindi’s Poker Journey
Of late, Goindi has been running pretty well. Just recently in February, he shipped the DPT High Roller, finished 10th in the DPT Main Event and now this decent score in this WPT PLO event.
Goindi is one of the earliest poker players in India and has been cashing live tournaments for more than 8 years now. He was the only Indian to finish runner-up in the 2012 Macau Poker Cup HK$11,000 NLH Red Dragon Main Event and earn a massive $136,245 (INR 96,97,306), his best live cash.
A graduate from Christ College, Bangalore, Goindi had won the first-ever Indian Player of the Year (IPOY) award in 2011 and since then there has been no looking back. He has been consistently performing and his consistency can be judged by the fact that he finished in the money 10 times in the IPC. This was probably the highest number of ITM finishes ever for any player in the IPC.
Goindi is well-known for his High Roller scores, both in India and abroad. Just last month, he won DPT 65K High Roller at the DPT February 2019 for INR 14,50,000. However, his biggest High Roller cash came when he won the ₱ 100,000 + 8,000 buy-in High Roller for $39,773 at the APT Manila in 2012. The same year, he had won the INR 1 Lac buy-in Indian Poker legend tournament for almost INR 16 Lac, apart from finishing 2nd runner-up in the 50K buy-in 6-Max High Roller of PokerGuru Season 2.
