Another World Poker Tour (WPT) Main Event is in the books and the Toronto-based Geoffrey Hum is the player to emerge as the latest champion. Hum outlasted a strong field of 1,109 entries in the CA$3,300 buy-in World Poker Tour (WPT) Montreal Main Event at the Playground Poker Club to win CA$500,000 ($380,648) and a $15,000 entry into the Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas.
Hum’s march to victory was no small feat as he had to face the shark-infested final table to emerge victorious in the WPT Montreal Main Event. The 30-year old player sat down for Day 5 play, facing the likes of high-stakes regular Michael Watson, WSOP bracelet winner Joseph Cheong, no. 4 on the women’s all-time money list Kristen Bicknell, and 2014 WSOP main event champion Martin Jacobson.
The final table was reached after two-time last woman standing in the WSOP main event Kelly Minkin exited in seventh place. The first elimination from FT came in Martin Jacobson who shoved 13 Bigs with Jd 10d and ran into Ajayi’s Ah Qh. The latter rivered a queen to send Jacobson in 6th place.
The eventual champion Hum avoided confrontation until play got five-handed where Bicknell ran her pocket kings into his pocket aces. Aces held up and that pot put Hum near the chip lead with four players remaining. Very soon, Hum took the lead after Watson’s A-Q lost to his pocket queens.
Continuing his momentum, Hum then eliminated Joseph Cheong in third place after his pocket eights out-flopped Cheong’s pocket jacks. Eventually, Hum entered heads-up holding 26.1M chips against 18.1M of Ajayi. The heads-up lasted only eight hands. The last hand saw both players seeing a flop of Kd 6h 4h. Ajayi committed his rest of stack holding Jh 9h. Unfortunately for him, Hum had Kh 7h for a flopped top pair and bigger flush draw. Another heart on the turn locked it up for Hum and he took down the title for CA$500,000*. Ajayi settled for CA$335,000 for his runner-up finish.
The large field of 1,109 entries enabled the tournament to comfortably surpass its CA$3 million guarantee. Top 159 players were paid and some notables among them included the likes of Curt Kohlberg (20th), Jonathan Roy (21st), James Romero (24th), Jerry Wong (33rd), Kitty Kuo (35th), Christian Harder (36th), Jack Salter (37th), Ari Engel (44th), Matt Salsberg (60th), Toby Lewis (65th), Mukul Pahuja (79th), Jeff Gross (102nd), Mike Sowers (120th), and Mike Sexton (138th) to name a few.
